Anything Goes - Celebrating the 20s
A celebration of all that's beautiful, strange and exciting about the 1920s, with a few excursions into the teens and 30s.

A lot of Edwardian Halloween post cards reference the tradition that, if you took a candle to the mirror on All Hallow’s Eve, you would see your future partner. Somehow she looks completely non-plussed about her destiny here (“Him? HE’S my future? Well…okay…”)

1920s 1920s mannequins
How fabulous are my 1920s-30 mannequin heads looking? I’ll be writing up a full entry on the restoration process, as the extremely talented restorer has documented it all, but here’s how they’re looking. Musidora’s lips are going to be taken down a shade or two in a vintage red (although I quite like the gothic look here), but they’re just about done, taken back to their original paintwork and all the dings repaired so seamlessly you wouldn’t know they were there. I have a huge collection of vintage headpieces and jewellery I’m looking forward to modelling on these!

How is the costume planning going?
With my mother - one of the most darling people you could ever meet, someone who has always inspired me. She’s on the mend now, and the friends she’s made around the world have been so supportive.
1920s napier art deco hug those you love - often
Isn’t she fabulous? That’s my mother on the right - a woman of extraordinary talent when it comes to restoring and conserving vintage and antique clothing, and someone who has always passionately supported my collection.
I nearly lost her two weeks ago, and spent what originally scheduled as a birthday party gathering for me was instead spent at her side in Emergency. That night, her electrolytes dropped so low that she went into convulsions and stopped breathing.
She’s is on the mend and they now know what the bacteria is that has made her so sick…but I’ve been a bit patchy in jumping on here to post. I’ll remedy that now things are on a more even keel…have some wonderful things to show, including some beaded dresses she’s restored, and the work on my mannequin heads is nearly complete so I can begin to photograph my hats, bandeaux, headdresses etc properly.
And while I’m on the personal info-dump…I’ll be hosting a Devonshire Tea and giving a talk on how to put together a Deco look at next year’s Art Deco Weekend in Napier. I know some of the Napier-goers read this blog and have had some lovely chats with them at the festival, but if you’re a first time goer or we haven’t met before and would like to talk 1920s fashion, please do come up and say hello!
