Funny medieval doodles

With their wild hair and frantic gaze, these doodled men look like fools. They are waving as if to seek contact with the reader. The thing is, the reader is busy singing and listening to a sermon. That is because these 800-year-old images are found in a Missal, a book used during Holy Mass. What a shock it must have been for the serious user of the book, to flip the page and suddenly find yourself face to face with these funny creatures. And what a great contrast: a serious book with silly drawings.

Pic: Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, MS 95 (Missal, 12th century). More about the manuscript here.

Ourpresidents jacqueline kennedy was born on @irishgirl728

Jacqueline Kennedy was born on this day in 1929, in Southhampton, New York.  She was named Jacqueline Lee Bouvier.  Her father, John, was a stockbroker on Wall Street whose family had come from France in the early 1800s. Her mother, Janet, had ancestors from Ireland and England.

As a child, Jackie loved to read. Before she started school, she had read all the children’s books on her bookshelves. Her heroes were Mowgli from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Little Lord Fauntleroy’s grandfather, Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind, and the poet Byron.

Beauvelvet i was not trying to be shocking or @irishgirl728

I was not trying to be shocking, or to be a pioneer. I wasn’t trying to change society, or to be ahead of my time. I didn’t think of myself as liberated, and I don’t believe that I did anything important. I was just myself. I didn’t know any other way to be, or any other way to live. ~ Bettie Page

Vintagegal dear mr vernon we accept the fact @irishgirl728

Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain and an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

That was the summer of 1963 - when everybody called me Baby, and it didn’t occur to me to mind. That was before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came, when I couldn’t wait to join the Peace Corps, and I thought I’d never find a guy as great as my dad. That was the summer we went to Kellerman’s.

Veralynn23 the past is vividly present in these @irishgirl728

The past is vividly present in these pictures taken nowadays. You’ll get your mind blown!

Old photographs always seem to have captured a particular slice of life. I don’t know if it’s because photos were more scarce and they required a lot of work and preparation…

A very skilled photographer decided to revisit 28 pictures that were taken in Hungary several years ago. He went to the exact same locations and captured these places with a modern look.

Then he merged the old shots with the modern ones to create some insightful images that are becoming witnesses of two different times. Most of these pictures were taken in Budapest, but some are in other parts of Hungary.
