This girl, in Odessa, might be saving Ukraine. Otherwise, at least she gets to take the horse out for a spin.

Spatialrelations this article in the bangor @mondaylinkparade

This article in the Bangor Daily News does an amazing job describing what happened in Central Maine (both inland and near the coast) in the late ’70s and how the Back to the Land movement has changed the entire state. I became friends with many of the children who grew up in this culture, and their lives and experiences have had a profound impact on me. If you do anything today, please read this article and watch the footage. It is amazing.

Some folks are from here and some folks are from away.

This is amazing i could lambaste it but i ont @mondaylinkparade

This is amazing. I could lambaste it, but I on’t really know where to start.

Things in ukraine are absolutely crazy right now @mondaylinkparade

Things in Ukraine are absolutely crazy right now.  I am having a hard time understanding it.  It seems like we should be hearing more in the media about the story, but coverage has been somewhat scant. The Atlantic’s In Focus photo blog has been running profoundly disturbing photos and I recommend taking a look at them.

Here’s a rundown of the unrest.

Here’s a stop-motion animation of Kiev from before.

There’s word that Yanukovych is ready to have early elections.

The picture isnt exactly right but sometimes you @mondaylinkparade

The picture isn’t exactly right, but sometimes you just have to go with it.  It’s Bourbon Day

Note that broseph is mistaken about the really big ice cubes.  I am of the opinion that regular to small ice cubes are best for both speedy cooling and proper dilution.  Also, whiskey and water is not a bad thing (see, e.g. The Three-Day Blow).

This post from Adventure Journal has a sick pic of a sicker line on the Aguille du Midi and starts out talking about text messaging with JP Auclair. I figured it couldn’t be one of the normal contributors.  It wasn’t.  it’s Swedish gnarlbro  Andreas Fransson.  Oh, by the way, it’s getting to be steeps skiing season!  Get it.

Here at mlp we use tumblrs queue feature to keep @mondaylinkparade

Here at MLP, we use Tumblr’s queue feature to keep things coming with some very little regularity.  For that reason, this morning’s post had the title “Well this sucks.” It does suck, but given the terrible business in Boston, I want to recognize that there are all kinds of sucky things out there.  Yuck.  Today you’ll get a two-post Tuesday and I’ll give you some radical if slightly pucker-inducing news: Two bros skied the north face of the Grand Teton. Wow.

Im ski racing at crested butte today ill @mondaylinkparade

I’m ski racing at Crested Butte today.  I’ll probably have to eat a bovine burrito though, in honor of the heroics of several backcountry skiers here earlier this month.  Skiers found some cows atop Heart Attack Ridge, called around the local ranchers, and returned the next day to try to get the cows down.  These cows were luckier than some in a similar conundrum last winter.

Dynafit has released information about some of @mondaylinkparade

Dynafit has released information about some of their new products for next year and they look fantastic. Details are available over at Wild Snow. Here’s my take:

Actually, the beast binding looks terrible.  It’s huge and heavy and I don’t need a DIN* of 16.  On the other hand, cliff-hucking clydesdales will certainly appreciate these hogs.  It will make a tour a lot more bearable than with Dukes.  The TLT 6 looks fantastic.  I’ll probably buy a pair of these as they solve a number of issues I have with my current favorite boot, the TLT5.  The wider toebox means I can probably drop a size, I think the meatarsal flex is dumb, and if the lower buckle is actually improved then I might not have to carry extras.  The Steve Romeo skis look cool; light weight on a 106mm-waist rockered ski is perfect for (North American) human-powered powder missions.  The other product I’m awfully excited about is the featherweight Cho Oyu ski.  89mm at the waist and 1080g  in my size makes these skis sound perfect for light and fast ski mountaineering.  I’ll take two.

On the aesthetics front, the beast is hideous, TLT6 doesn’t is slightly better, but no pageant winner, Grand Teton looks cool but those graphics scream PNW, and Cho Oyus are spartan and ugly (a difficult and unlikely combination).  Oh well, not everyone can ride beauts or even buttes.

*Yeah, DIN certification!  This basically just means that we can start taking the obnoxious caveats out of conversations about tech ski binding release settings.

And why dont gain and again rhyme this is a fun @mondaylinkparade

And why don’t gain and again rhyme?  This is a fun only slightly heavy actually pretty heavy piece about the etymology of again. One particularly interesting bit refers to the pronunciation of g- sounds (they sometimes sound like y-). The only reason we still have g- in the alphabet is the vikings (see, e.g.). This explains does not explain the correct pronunciation of my Swedish friend’s name.

Phonetic system is like a modern democracy, which faces chaos and in trying to overcome it produces even greater chaos. There is no end to this process.

Get it Gain it. Again.

Extra points for describing the “parasitic” addition of final letters to words as excrescent.  My personal favorite example is the excrescent -s on the end of the word anyway.

There are only 14 peaks in the world over 8000m @mondaylinkparade

There are only 14 peaks in the world over 8,000m.  That makes them a pretty impressive and sought-after bunch of mountains.  French alpinist Maurice Herzog led the first team to successfully summit (and return from) one of these peaks, climbing Annapurna in 1953.  His account in the book Annapurna is riveting.

Herzog died last week.

Google maps for iphone get it there has to @mondaylinkparade

Google Maps for iPhone.  Get it.

There has to be a rant out there for this topic, but I’m going to give you the three sentence version:

Vector maps make more sense in a world where we are charged for bandwith, but carry very powerful computers.  Basically smartphones are the opposite of the thin clients that some folks used to think were the future.  If you only have to download vector data and then use the power of the phone’s processor to draw your maps then the whole thing can be much faster.

Apple is on the right track even if they blew it on the first try.  Come to think of it, that’s pretty weird for them.  Releasing an unpolished version as a sort of proof of concept is what all of these startups and Google were supposed to be into.  Historically Apple has been late to the game to make sure that whatever they released would work flawlessly (see, e.g.).

Ryan dunfee of powder magazine appeals to all of @mondaylinkparade

Ryan Dunfee of Powder Magazine appeals to all of us to focus on skiing pretty this winter.  He has a point.  Skiing and riding can be beautiful to watch;  let’s make that our goal.  Check the comments if you disagree.

Dabrim its for real so there are these @mondaylinkparade

DaBrim.  It’s for real.

So there are these things that are popular in a certain subset of the kayaking community: old dudes who have been boating whitewater since fiberglass. (This group notably does not include squirt-boaters, a wholly different breed of kayaker.)  It seems that DaBrim is trying to bring this questionable fashion move to the teeming helmeted masses.  Practical arguments aside, I’d only get one if it made me look like a mounty.

Which is the best one park not logo im @mondaylinkparade

Which is the best one (park, not logo)? I’m partial to Acadia. And Grand Teton and RMNP. And I really want to spend some time in the Grand Canyon, Rainier, Glacier, and especially Wrangell-St. Elias.

The daily pow is predictably a daily piece about @mondaylinkparade

The Daily Pow is, predictably, a daily piece about snow.  This one is about night skiing and reminded me of my brief collegiate racing experience.  We would also come back from practice in the middle of parties.  (The best was when you could stop in to a Thursday night event at the Deansboro.)

There are a lot of new breweries in denver i @mondaylinkparade

There are a lot of new breweries in Denver.  I think that Denver Beer Co., TRVE, and Renegade are my current favorites, but there are plenty more to try!

Also, a big thumbs up to Black Shirt Brewing!  I haven’t had their beer, but the folks are nice.

There have been rumblings for a while but it @mondaylinkparade

There have been rumblings for a while, but it looks like one of the great holdouts of telemark skiing has fallen into the ranks of AT, swayed by dynafit.

Well i was going to wait for a hot minute but it @mondaylinkparade

Well I was going to wait for a hot minute, but it appears that Kottke shares my affinity for the classic McSweeny’s piece on decorative gourds.  You may remember it from last year.  Speaking of which, MLP is over a year old.  I missed it.  Oops.

Hey team science @mondaylinkparade

Hey team, SCIENCE!

Theres an interesting piece on the billlfold @mondaylinkparade

There’s an interesting piece on The Billlfold today about travel and moneymaking in Kosovo and Iraq.

Of course, all I understood at the time was JOB INTERVIEW and VIENNA. Prior to my application, I had never heard of the OSCE, and I knew next to nothing about Kosovo. My IT skills were rudimentary and my management experience nonexistent. I was mystified why I got a call. I was so completely unqualified for this job, I might have treated this like a mini-vacation but for one significant fact: the salary. The job paid $85,000 a year, tax-free (due to the glorious Foreign Earned Income Exclusion). This was an incomprehensible amount of money. It would fix everything. The pressure to do well in this interview, just for this one small chance at a dream life and the magical solution to all of my problems, was intense.

It was fun to read, and somewhat reminiscent of both Tony Horwitz’s Bahgdad Without a Map and Aurthur Phillips’s Prague*.  Needless to say, i immediately had about five windows open looking at jobs in exciting places.  Tbilisi, you might be on the agenda.  Word on the street is that the Caucuses hold some fantastic skiing.

*It also reminded me, somewhat disturbingly, of this article about gun runners.

“There’s and?”  I’m horribly sorry about that typo.

This has been a tough year in the mountains @mondaylinkparade

This has been a tough year in the mountains.  There was another tragedy on Thursday when Nick Hall, a climbing ranger on Mt. Rainier and Patten, ME native, died after rescuing two climbers who had fallen into a crevasse.  Sometimes our activities are dangerous.  Be safe out there, everybody.

Free b cycle wednesdays this month denver @mondaylinkparade

Free B-cycle Wednesdays this month.  Denver cruisers, anyone?

I wouldn’t actually do the whole cruiser ride on a B-cycle because they’re only free for a half hour.

This thing looks great its really heavy and the @mondaylinkparade

This thing looks great.  It’s really heavy and the woods usually have stuff moving around, but how else are you protecting yourself against critters?

If you havent already been outraged by this then @mondaylinkparade

If you haven’t already been outraged by this then you are so out of the loop.  Seriously though, this is possibly the most dangerous thing I’ve ever seen.  Here’s a short rundown for those not obsessed with checking out backcountry skiing gear: avalanche transceivers (AKA beacons) are a tool to find people who have been buried in an avalanche.  Everyone needs to have one and they have a “send” mode and a “search” mode.  You ski in “send” mode, and if somebody is buried then evryone else switches to “search” mode and uses their beacons to find the buried party(ies).

This asinine contraption is like a regular transceiver, but is only a transmitter.  That means you can’t find a buried skier with it. It’s also ugly.

The internet is pretty pissed.

This is cool i think ill try to make similar @mondaylinkparade

This is cool.  I think I’ll try to make similar maps for my GIS class!  Maybe somebody can recommend some good GIS clearinghouses.  CUGIR is soo undergrad.

I like reading and i like lists this is both @mondaylinkparade

I like reading and I like lists.  This is both!  It’s nice to see positive memories about Salinger short stories and disparaging ones about Ms. Rand.  On a slightly different note, it’s really interesting to see the bastardization of Objectivism that passes for a philosophy of governance these days.  /rant

Clearly my elk is a 12 on this list the good @mondaylinkparade

Clearly my elk is a #12.  On this list, the good folks at MLP tend to score pretty high. Then again, we don’t eat much meat.

The italian the italian doesnt seem to care for @mondaylinkparade

The Italian

The Italian doesn’t seem to care for Italians very much. “Terrible businessmen,” he says. In Italy, we only race. No one is riding Oorban. No one is touring. He rides the white roads of Tuscany, stops at a hotel, and gets greeted in English. “I am Italian,” he says. “Why are you here,” they reply. “Here we only have Americans and Germans.”

This is a  very short essay on the future of cycling. Read it. I’m over racing.

This will be fun @mondaylinkparade

This will be fun.
